Including a toddler in a newborn session sounds beautiful… until you picture the chaos. If you’re already wondering how your toddler will behave (or if they’ll cooperate at all), you’re not alone… and you’re not wrong to worry.
Here’s the good news: there’s a strategy for this. With the right pacing, a little preparation, and a photographer who’s done this a time or two, it can actually be fun—quick, but fun.
How I Structure the Session (So It Works for Everyone)
Here’s what works best:
Mom and baby arrive first. We take our time getting those calm, sleepy newborn images without distractions. No rush. No toddler needing snacks or attention.
Then, two hours later, Dad brings the toddler. They come in fresh… fed, rested, and ready for a few minutes of “big sibling magic.” We keep this part short and sweet. Most toddler shots happen within the first 5–10 minutes of them walking in. That window is golden.
Once we’ve captured sibling portraits and a few full family images, Dad and toddler can head out, and we wrap up with a few final solo shots of baby or mom.
This flow respects your toddler’s attention span… and your sanity. And of course if your toddler still has a nap time make sure to let me know so we can try and stick to the schedule.

Let’s Talk About Expectations
Toddlers aren’t designed to sit still and smile on command. And that’s okay. We don’t need them to be perfect… we just need a few real, honest moments. The best thing you can do is show up calm and trust the process.
The more relaxed you are, the more your toddler will follow your lead.
What to Avoid (And What to Bring)
Leave the iPad at home.
Screens almost always backfire. Once they’re out, toddlers rarely want to put them down.
Snacks are okay—but keep them clean.
Mini marshmallows or white puffs are perfect. Avoid chocolate or colored treats that can stain fingers or clothing. Remember once you bring a snack out, it will be a fixture in the session. Try to wait till the end or only if its really needed.
Skip the bribes.
They create tension and often end in tears. Let us keep things light and playful.
Don’t bring their favorite toy.
We’ve got neutral, photo-friendly toys in the studio that work like a charm… without becoming the only thing they’ll hold.

Real Talk: It’s Not Perfect. It’s Real.
We’re not aiming for perfect. We’re aiming for true to this season. Your toddler might not hold baby’s hand just the way you imagined… and that’s okay. The image of them glancing shyly at their new sibling while clinging to your leg? That’s the one you’ll treasure.
